For A-level Maths, Chemistry, Physics, or Biology students who want to improve their predicted grades and prepare effectively for Year 13 without having to spend the whole summer studying

Every year, many students go into Year 13 unprepared

  • They think they have until next summer to master the subject. That's true for their final grade, but their predicted grade is decided by the school early in Year 13. This is usually based on a test or mock exam. Universities use this to decide who they offer places to, so it is important for students to make an excellent start to the year especially if they are applying for competitive courses or top universities.

  • There is a big jump in standard between GCSE and A-level. Students are given a lot of information very quickly, which means that some concepts are not fully understood and they find it difficult to distinguish between what's really important and what's just interesting background material.

  • A lot can be – and often is – forgotten over the summer holidays.

  • The Year 13 material is more challenging than Year 12. Students taken by surprise can spend most of the year engaged in a struggle to catch up.

Year 13 goes very fast and students have less time than they think. The university application process (applying through UCAS, writing a personal statement, attending interviews, etc), aptitude tests required for certain courses and certain universities (e.g. UCAT that many universities require for Medicine, ESAT that some require for Sciences or Engineering, etc), extracurricular activities, work experience all eat into the time available.

The summer courses address all of these issues. They are designed to

  • help improve predicted grade

  • consolidate knowledge and understanding of Year 12 topics

  • introduce key new topics to get ahead of the game for Year 13

This enables a stronger UCAS application and helps them remain on top of the material, which will make it easier for them to achieve the grade they need next summer.

Obviously, you need a break and don't want to spend the whole holiday studying! However, taking a little action now can avoid the distress and complication of having to go through clearing, doing resits, or settling for a less desirable course in year's time.

Dates

The courses start the week beginning 20 July and run for six weeks. The time commitment will be a few hours per week, which will ensure productive study and steady consolidation, without students being inundated with work, so they will still be able to enjoy the summer break.

To discuss if these courses are appropriate for your son or daughter, message us on WhatsApp. We can talk about their situation and possibly arrange a call.

Testimonials

Kingsmill Bond (parent)

Zaid has tutored all three of my children and a number of their friends in Maths and Further Maths for A-level. He did an excellent job and they all got A or A* in their exams. One of Zaid's core strengths is his ability to simplify complex issues and to find ways to get people to understand the maths not just to learn it. In addition, he helped them with Physics and Chemistry where he also has deep expertise. He has been amazing, and I would not hesitate to recommend him as a tutor.

Daisy van den Berg (student)

...I really struggled at school with Maths, but was determined to take the subject at A-level. I was disappointed when my teacher at school would not put my 'predicted grade' for Maths at more than a C, as this affected the universities I could apply for.

After this, a few months before my exams, I signed up to small group tutoring sessions with Zaid. He managed to explain the syllabus to us slowly and clearly, and he made the subject much more accessible than my teachers at school had.

I received an A grade for A-level Maths, and in fact I received one of the highest grades in my year. There is absolutely no way I could have achieved this without Zaid's patient tutoring!

Steve Royce (parent)

In terms of your tutoring of my son, Zac, I simply cannot thank you enough. He was really struggling with many issues, having been through the mill at a few quite elite Oxford educational institutions. He lost his confidence and most importantly lost his trust in those meant to teach him.

You immediately saw promise in him, tailored your tutorials to his needs, brought back his enthusiasm; he thrived and looked forward to your lessons. And the fact that you literally hand wrote him personalised text books, totally beyond what one would ever expect. I regard you as the crucial factor in the return of my son to enjoying and taking advantage of his abilities, abilities that you saw and nurtured right from your first couple of meetings.

I literally cannot thank you enough. Any help or anything further you need, just let me know Zaid, I mean it.

Robert Butler, Principal, Oxford Education Advisors (professional colleague)

I have known Zaid professionally for over 30 years. He worked for me from 2001-2012 as a tutor in Sciences and Maths at all levels at a private college in Oxford, where I was Vice Principal. Since then, as an educational consultant, I have continued to employ him consistently over the years. He is a hugely experienced and outstanding tutor, with an in-depth knowledge of all his subjects as well as the individual, differing requirements of each exam specification. He explains and demonstrates with clarity and precision and adapts his methods to suit the needs of the student in question and overcome any specific learning issues they might be having. He focuses not only on imparting factual knowledge but also on exam techniques designed to maximize students' marks.

Nick Weller (professional colleague)

I have known Zaid as a tutor of Maths for over twenty years during which time he has taught dozens of A-Level students for me.

Zaid has extensive experience of helping both high-flyers and strugglers and he is the outstanding A-Level Maths tutor in Oxford in my opinion.

Zaid has incredible knowledge not only of the exam requirements for all Maths syllabuses but also University applications, revision skills, and every aspect of preparing for A-Level exams.

Anita Bradshaw (parent)

Dear Zaid,

A thousand thanks for all your hard work, which has resulted in such an improvement over what we were expecting today!

Anne-Marie has worked very hard, and was full of confidence, but you helped her put it all together. I was completely thrilled to hear how much improved her scores were over the first scores she obtained at school.

We are so much more confident that she will get some good medical schools interviewing her now, and that you have really opened the doors for her future career. It means so much to her to be able to pursue her dream.

Tamara Powell (student)

Zaid's approach to teaching is no nonsense. Sticking strictly to exam content, Zaid cuts the fat out of the syllabus to waste no time with unnecessary waffle. Lessons were always fool-proof, with structured, organised learning followed by practice with past exam papers. Zaid created a unique set of rules to follow when tackling exam questions, which no teacher at school ever provided me with.

Eleanor (student)

As a student with quite low confidence to begin with Zaid has ensured that despite not taking maths alongside physics, I have all the skills I need to do well. He is a very understanding individual and he has allowed me to enjoy the course and greatly improve my grades.

Julia (parent)

Zaid has been helping my daughter for nearly a year with A-level mathematics. He has been extremely helpful, very flexible and professional. Zaid explains complex concepts in a way that is easy to understand and uses various approaches to make sure the problem is well understood. My daughter's confidence in maths increased dramatically. Thank you!

James Cranfield (parent)

Our daughter didn't have the opportunity to sit A-levels in 2020 due to the Covid pandemic, and didn't receive the assessed grades that she was hoping for from her sixth form college. Having deferred her university application for a year, she needed tuition to obtain A-grades [...] as well as more general support and advice to manage her university application and to understand how she would sit her A-levels as an external candidate.

We were delighted to find Oxford Science and Maths Tutors and felt we were in safe hands from the start. The quality of the online tuition from Zaid and Alex was outstanding, and our daughter built strong relationships with her tutors through twice-weekly online sessions.

[...]

Her knowledge, self-learning skills and exam technique all improved massively through the year, and as parents we received regular feedback on her progress.

Rob and Zaid s guidance and support on the UCAS application and taking exams as an external candidate was also invaluable. In the end, the 2021 summer exam series was cancelled, but we had already discussed a contingency plan to ensure our daughter received a centre-assessed grade through multiple assessments and mock exams. She was delighted to be awarded A* in both subjects and is now looking forward to studying pharmacology at university.

In short, the team at Oxford Science and Maths Tutors provide the highest quality of academic, administrative and pastoral support, and I can t recommend them highly enough.
